Botox vs Dysport

December 10, 2009 on 2:14 pm | In BOTOX, Dysport | No Comments

logo-dysportlogo_botox_2BOTOX and Dysport are both Botulinum Toxin A but are made by different companies. BOTOX has been available for longer, but Dysport is now FDA approved and has been found to be as effective and safe as BOTOX.

Dysport received FDA approval in late April 2009 and is now being offered at many Medspas. It’s no surprise that it’s catching on since BOTOX has been such a blockbuster. With competition the prices for both will hopefully go down.

Clients ask us why the price per unit for Dysport is so much lower than BOTOX. This is because, on average, three times as much Dysport is needed to achieve the same results. But even taking the 3 to 1 ratio into account Dysport is still a little less expensive.

Dysport claims that it works more quickly and Medicis has data to show it begins working in some patients at day 1, compared to 2 to 14 days for BOTOX.

Dysport seems to work better in the forehead with quicker onset and less units used.  This May be because the product has a higher propensity for diffusion (spreading). And Dysport has a slightly longer duration when dosed at a 3:1 (3 Dysport units for every 1 BOTOX unit).

As Dysport is used more widely other differences may emerge. But in any case competition is always good for consumers.
