The IPL Photofacial is a non-ablative procedure that eliminates age spots, sun damage, redness and old acne scars. The procedure can be applied anywhere on the body but is mostly used on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and hands.

In layman’s terms, IPL Photofacial treats the unwanted “reds” and “browns” that dull the complexion. Reds (like some forms of rosacea, acne scars and spider veins) and browns (like sun damage, sun spots, and acne and other scars) build up over time and create an “aged” appearance.

The wavelength spectrum of the Palomar Icon Aesthetic System targets these tiny pockets of undesirable pigment in the skin. As the hemoglobin (red) and melanin (brown) absorb the light, they heat up and fragment, becoming waste or dead cells. Then the skin’s own specialized cells, called “phagocytes”, go into action to remove this waste material revealing a clear and more youthful complexion.

The Icon aesthetic system from Cynosure was the first melanin reader to have FDA clearance. Its Advanced Contact Cooling system was designed to keep the temperature of the unit during treatments cooler to protect the skin from damage and to minimize discomfort.

Rosacea and Spider Veins

Men and women who suffer from rosacea and spider veins on the nose, cheeks and elsewhere on the face can benefit from IPL skin rejuvenation treatment. The Palomar Icon light pulse is programmed to target these pockets of visible veins and redness to provide effective rosacea treatment and spider vein treatment.

As the light pulses are absorbed into the pigment, it causes thermal damage to the vessel wall. The damaged blood vessel is then absorbed into the body as part of the natural healing process and the redness which once dulled the complexion is simply gone.

Years of sun exposure cause the skin to overproduce pockets of melanin on the skin. This shows up as brown spots, sun spots, age spots etc. The Palomar Icon delivers a spectrum of light wavelengths that are readily absorbed by these pockets of melanin sun damage treatment and and age spots removal. As the light reacts with the pigment, the spots are heated up and destroyed. These dead skin cells fall away, and a more even skin tone is revealed.

Not only does IPL eliminate unsightly blemishes. IPL skin rejuvenation treatment also heats the skin cells under the surface, increasing collagen production.

Other issues such as acne, ingrown hair and other damage to the skin can leave reddish-brown marks long after these blemishes are gone. Again, the Palomar Icon IPL can target this inflammation and destroy it without damaging the surrounding tissue.

By using IPL Photo Facial technology to quickly and intensely heat only the pigment, we can clear the skin of these imperfections. As soon as the treatment is over, the phagocytes are prompted into action, and the skin begins a naturally regenerative process to provide a younger, healthier looking complexion.

Benefits of IPL Photofacials

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments, or photofacials, are minimally invasive aesthetic procedures designed to rejuvenate the skin and diminish visible signs of aging. During the skincare procedure, estheticians use specially designed devices that deliver varying wavelengths of light.

While laser treatments rely on a single intense wavelength of light energy, the multiple wavelengths used in intense pulsed light therapy reach the second layer of your skin without damaging the top layer, which is called the epidermis.

This deep-reaching effect enables estheticians to achieve stunning results to correct the underlying cause of skin damage without the side effects of laser treatments.

In addition, the differences allow photofacials, also known as photorejuvenation treatment, to treat a large surface area in little time. During IPL therapy, the light waves break down the damaged cells responsible for the visible signs of skin damage. Your body then naturally removes the dead skin cells within the treated area to restore your youthful glow.

IPL photofacials have shorter recovery times than most other aesthetic skin procedures. They also require less aftercare to achieve positive results. The first IPL device received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1995. Since then, estheticians such as those at Bella Medspa have perfected their technique to consistently achieve optimal results.

Who Should Get IPL Treatment?

Individuals who wish to remove freckles, birthmarks, and other instances of hyperpigmentation or discoloration are good candidates for IPL photofacial treatment. The skin treatment can also correct fine lines, spider veins, age spots/blemishes, brown spots/dark spots, sun damage/sun spots, acne scars, and rosacea. Those with unwanted hair on their face, back, chest, legs, underarms, or bikini lines are also good candidates. Estheticians can also correct varicose veins with IPL treatments.

The procedure is appropriate for almost anyone in good overall health who wants to improve their skin texture and/or appearance. That said, those with pale to light-brown skin tones and darker hair will achieve the best results.

Who Shouldn’t Get IPL Treatment?

IPL treatments are not recommended for individuals with darker skin tones because the light can alter pigmentation. Photofacials are also less effective for light-colored hair.

Those with a history of keloid scarring, lesions, or other serious skin conditions should avoid IPL treatments. Photofacials are inappropriate for people with possible skin cancer, light sensitivities, or skin resurfacing conditions.

It’s critical to be forthright and thorough with your esthetician to rule out possible contraindications to IPL treatments that could render the treatment ineffective or lead to serious side effects.

Side Effects of IPL Treatment

Side effects from IPL treatments are generally mild. The most common ones are skin redness and mild swelling. These effects usually subside within one or two days of the procedure.

All treatments carry risks. Blisters, bruises, changes in skin color, and infection are all possible. Some people experience bleeding, scarring, or crusting. However, these side effects are rare and typically only occur when patients don’t disclose underlying health conditions that make them poor candidates for IPL treatment.

IPL Treatment Recovery

IPL treatment recovery involves much less downtime than many other skin rejuvenating procedures. The devices used to administer photofacials are designed to affect deeper layers of skin without impacting the top layer.

You will be able to resume your usual activity immediately after the procedure. Many patients describe feeling a stinging sensation after the treatment, similar to a sunburn. This discomfort usually fades within a few hours of the session. You should avoid sun exposure and wear high-SPF sunscreen during that window.

You can use a cool washcloth to soothe the irritated area. Your sensitivity will persist for a few days and dissipate over time.

Makeup and lotion cannot be applied for 24 hours after the procedure. After that time has passed, you can resume your routine. You may need to wash with cooler-than-usual water due to sensitivity until your skin fully recovers. Moisturizing the area twice daily for three months following the procedure is also advised.

Your esthetician will provide valuable aftercare instructions based on your skin and the nature of your procedure. Compliance with these directions will maximize your results.

How Long Does an IPL Photofacial Last?

The longevity of your results will depend on your anatomy and the type of damage targeted by the photofacial. Most people need multiple treatments to attain their optimal results. Estheticians commonly recommend yearly follow-up treatments to help patients maintain their rejuvenated appearance.

It’s important to remember that photofacials correct visible signs of skin damage but do not prevent future aging or skin changes.
